AI Sports Challenge 2021: Meet the top sixteen

Behind the knights and wizards and digging past the cold calculating algorithms, are a group of dedicated and passionate engineers who have spent over 16 days crafting their perfect agent in the AI Sports Challenge. Read on to meet the teams and their agent biographies below.

The AI Sports Challenge 2021 is an online AI competition sponsored by Deputy, Lab17, MongoDB and GitLab. Thank you also to our community partners Hackathons Australia, General Assembly, SitePoint and the Data Science and AI Association of Australia (DSAI) for your support!

AvadaKedavra

The Donkie returns! Finishing second place in the 2020 AI Sports Challenge, the duo of engineers behind team AvadaKedavra are from Australia and Malaysia. Aside from magical incantations the team also packed their technical knowledge in Computer Engineering, Psychology and Artificial Intelligence into their agent.

AvadaKedavra (A.K.A. it-who-must-not-be-named) is the direct descendant of Donkie. Be prepared for the killing curse in the dungeon of fire!

Achievements:

2020 AI Sports Challenge: 2nd Place (As team Donkie) 2021 AI Sports Challenge: 4th Place

Bruh

A returning team from the 2020 AI Sports Challenge, the engineers behind team bruh prefer a quieter approach and letting their agent do the talking.

bruh…

bruh gif.

Wigglyblob

After dominating the tournament last year and sweeping their opponent 2–0 in the grand finals, our 2020 champions returned to defend their crown.

The engineers behind the scenes are two busy people failing at their machine learning attempts at their real work, but have found solace in implementing artificial intelligence in the AI Sports Challenges.

:3

A solo project, envisioned and designed by a 3rd year UNSW Australia software engineering student. Team :3 punched well above their cute namesake both in the AI Sports Challenge and in agent biographies.

This bot’s tournament nickname is the :3 smiley, assigned as a test before knowing it couldn’t be changed. The bot’s internal name is Agent Cuddles, given after the original design’s tendency to hug the opponent in a corner for the duration of the entire game. Its main behavioural pattern comes from the calculation of all possible paths the opponent is able to take, and its main goal is to stand on the tile covering the most paths. Relying largely on Dijkstra’s algorithm, computed from three unique points on the map: the player’s own position, the opponent’s position, as well as the central point of the map, the bot then adjusts tile values using heuristics to allow more efficient moves. Since the Qualifier’s stage, Agent Cuddles has gained the ability to predict the advance of the endgame flame spiral, and typically attempts to outperform opponents at this stage of the game.

Import numpy as pd

A team that submitted few words, the engineers behind team import numpy as pd seemed to take inspiration from a block of cheese…

… and it’s not very good

Rng for the win :>

A team with triple threats, the trio behind team rng for the win :> are all first-year university students from Indonesia but are currently studying in Jakarta, Melbourne, and Taiwan. The team are in the early stages of their journey into the tech industry but are hoping that they can build bigger things in the future.

Our agent is using A* pathfinding algorithms. Safety is our priority but that does not mean we won’t look for the opportunity to blow you up. So be careful ;)

Silver Snakes

Slithering into the AI Sports Challenge team Silver Snakes kept the objectives simple… three nerds, one bot.

Java: Now powering 3 billion devices and a bot that will kick your butt!

The Screw Shop

A returning team from the 2020 AI Sports Challenge. The team of engineers behind The Screw Shop; Pieter, Gilles, and Bram, found inspiration for their team’s name after combining the first letters of their names to form PGB (their 2020 team name). They then discovered that the same 3 letters is a shop in Europe selling all types of screws… and so The Screw Shop was born!

Pieter, Gilles, and Bram are PHD students, but Giles successfully defended his PhD and was awarded the title of Doctor in Computer Science Engineering!

From the team here at Coder One, congratulations on your awesome achievement! 👏

Fully rule based system, with some baiting characteristics.

Totoro

In what could only be described as the massacre of many childhood memories, the engineers behind team Totoro ate the adorable chinchilla and became one with the beast. The resulting mix of software engineers, data scientist, hackers, and some guy with 2 cores took the rest of the competition by surprise.

Never gonna give you up. Never gonna let you down. Never gonna turn around and desert you. (Unless it’s for pickup)

Ascend

Not much is known about the solo developer behind team Ascend, but none is needed after they ascended through the lower bracket and took home a podium finish!

Achievements:

Die Jigglybluff

A returning team from the 2020 AI Sports Challenge, the engineers behind this team came into the the tournament this year with one goal… to kill Jigglybluff / Wigglyblob

Our agent only thinks about killing Jigglybluff. We come here for revenge if not this time, then next time.

🤔 (Thinking Emoji)

The team name that confused many editing programs, and thus was often referenced as the “Thinking Emoji” — we are relieved the team took it in their stride and cleared it up for us later.

Can be written/spoken as “Thinking Emoji” but officially the “team” name is the literal emoji.

ValGrowth

A solo engineer from Japan. He joined for fun but ended up sweeping the competition!

Algorithm: Decoupled UCT. Using the evaluation function, not doing playout. Strategy: To maximize the area I get when doing FloodFill.

2021 AI Sports Challenge: First Place🏆

LEVAI ACKERMAN

Returning to AI Sports Challenge for their second year, the engineer behind team LEVAI ACKERMAN joined to learn more about artificial intelligence while having a bit of fun! He also proved his crafty ability to procure very familiar but questionable agent names and biographies…

LEVAI Ackerman, often formally referred to as Captain LEVAI is the squad captain of the Special Operations Squad within the Survey Corps and is widely known as humanity’s strongest bot. Though LEVAI is aware that his battle skill is in a different league from that of almost any other bot alive, he is not particularly arrogant about it, as he knows from experience that no bot is invulnerable.
